<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"FONT-SIZE:18pt;COLOR:blue;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\">the &#39;art&#39; of management <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">SYNOPSIS: <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><em><span style=\"COLOR:black;\">In the necessary process of defining to a letter operational tasks in order<\/span><\/em><span style=\"COLOR:black;\"><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><em><span style=\"COLOR:black;\">to manage programmes and budgets, other even more important <\/span><\/em><span style=\"COLOR:black;\"><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><em><span style=\"COLOR:black;\">management objectives can be sometimes missed.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The positive and<\/span><\/em><span style=\"COLOR:black;\"><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><em><span style=\"COLOR:black;\">negative role of design within this is not always appreciated. <\/span><\/em><span style=\"COLOR:black;\"><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">Design and designers are for the most part not held in great esteem by management.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">They are on occasions a necessary evil, one to be held firmly in check by project<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">managers who will prescribe what the designers must do and thereafter limit any<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">excess or irrelevance.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>On occasions they are a useful part of marketing, called in to<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">help promote an image or, more cynically, used to flatter the egos of senior <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">management.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>But as a &#39;management tool&#39;, as a way of communicating or <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">implementing various management objectives, they are unlikely to be considered. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><em><span style=\"COLOR:blue;\">The project for Tasco Europe <\/span><\/em><span style=\"COLOR:blue;\"><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">It is refreshing therefore to see how design has been used in a project just now<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">starting to take shape in Glasgow ,<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The project (for Tasco Europe) is unusual, partly<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">in its parentage (it is a joint venture between Shell and Ernst &amp; Young, and has at its<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">heart new and innovative ideas about management), partly in the fact that the<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">organisation has grown as the design has grown &#8211; from being an idea, to a joint<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">commitment to a recruitment programme to a training programme, to a workforce of<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">approximately 120 at the time of writing.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>By the end of 1998 it aims to have over 200<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">employees and by mid -1999 a total complement of over 400 &#8211; as a first location. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">The project has had the luxury of gradual evolution and the convenience of a clean<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">beginning, without the usual clutter of middle management scepticism and self-<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">interest.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It has however grown very fast and the temptation must have always been<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">there to prescribe what was required and shut down the risks associated with design<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">or open-ended thinking.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>However to say that the project has enjoyed the luxury of<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">creativity is in no way to say that it has been characterised by extravagance or an<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">atmosphere of laissez faire.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Far from it.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Project management has been central to<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">the entire exercise &#8211; it is only that design has been harnessed within this total<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">process; that its ability to assist in achieving the overall objectives has been<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">appreciated. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><em><span style=\"COLOR:blue;\">An evolutionary process <\/span><\/em><span style=\"COLOR:blue;\"><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">An enlightened approach to design &#8211; that which sees design as part of a process<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">rather than the production of a finite object &#8211; recognises the fact that its task is never<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">done, that it is bound to evolve as the organisation which it supports evolves; that the<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">process is one of continual proposition, testing and feedback.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>This is how the<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">process of management was conceived for the new organisation, as a constant <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">setting of targets, monitoring against targets, quantitative and qualitative analysis and<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">the setting of new targets.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The design process therefore sat comfortably within the<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">management of the project as a whole. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><em><span style=\"COLOR:blue;\">The business of Tasco Europe <\/span><\/em><span style=\"COLOR:blue;\"><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">On the face of it, the business of Tasco would not appear to be an obvious candidate<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">for the harnessing of design.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Accountancy and order-processing from a distance (for<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"FONT-SIZE:11pt;COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\">Shell in the first instance and for other multi-nationals in due course) is not <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">immediately thought of in terms of innovative office environments and staff <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">participation.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>But when seen as part of the need to create an essentially different<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">work ethos and create an entirely new type of organisation the relevance becomes<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">clearer.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The management logic behind the new company involves &quot;down sizing&quot;,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">&quot;outsourcing&quot; and &quot;empowering&quot;.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Not only did the opportunity exist technologically to<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">carry out a variety of accountancy processes remote from customer bases, but the<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">opportunity existed to create a workforce with a different ethos from the thorough but<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"FONT-SIZE:11pt;COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\">essentially conservative nature of the parent organisations.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Like all major <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"FONT-SIZE:11pt;COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\">organisations experiencing greater competition and the need to be even more <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">responsive to changing markets, Tasco&#39;s prime objective was to reinvent the nature<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">of its business and then provide an atmosphere in which it could continue to be<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">reinvented &#8211; to engender a kind of &quot;creative anarchy&quot; as it was explained to the<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">design team. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><em><span style=\"COLOR:blue;\">Design as part of the business process <\/span><\/em><span style=\"COLOR:blue;\"><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">Thus, to enter what is now &quot;an accountants office&quot; and find it full of bright colours and<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">with an air of distinct informality might not seem too strange.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The contribution of<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"FONT-SIZE:11pt;COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\">design has however gone much further than this creation of an immediate <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">impression, important though it indeed is. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">The story starts with the appointment of the design team and goes on thereafter as a<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">gradual but formal process of proposal and review, in a manner which is different<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">from most &quot;project managed&quot; design projects. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"FONT-SIZE:9pt;COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">It is now common practice for the design team to be handed at appointment a<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">comprehensive brief, setting out organisational requirements complete to the size<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">and number of desks, the location and exact fitting out of the photocopy or kitchen<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">areas.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The Tasco design team were given nothing other than a key date when the<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">business was due to go live, and otherwise a spirited description by the new chief<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">executive of the character of the organisation itself.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>In this first meeting, held with<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">beguiling informality, were the ingredients of a series of activities which made the<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">design process different.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">Not only was there no prescription in the form of a comprehensive brief and not only<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">was a direct relationship with senior management established from the very start, but<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">the &quot;design briefing&quot; significantly incorporated all the members of the team (those<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">involved with property search, recruitment, marketing, IT, process planning, project<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">management, as well as the architects and engineers) thereby drawing no distinction<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">between the physical design process and the rest of the process required to get the<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">new business up and running.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The objectives were spelled out in business terms<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">and were bought into by the total team.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>In addition, the meeting took place at the<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"FONT-SIZE:11pt;COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\">earliest opportunity and set up a process of proposal and review which then unfolded<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"FONT-SIZE:11pt;COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\">in parallel with the evolution of the organisation itself. Without there being an existing<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">organisation it might be cynically suggested that such a process of symbiotic growth<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">was inevitable.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Another route however and a much simpler one to have followed,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">might have been to map out a comprehensive set of requirements without the<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">inconvenience of their having to reflect reality, and without their having to be bought<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">into by other members of the team.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">Such a route would have been efficient to mobilise and simple to project manage.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">could have delivered on programme and budget;<span>&nbsp; <\/span>it might not however have <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">delivered on what was actually required in supporting a motivated, flexible, efficient,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">and re-inventive organisation. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">The truth is that with or without an existing organisation it is not possible to know in<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">advance exactly what is required, and, to set up such a finite system, is to deny the<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">process of evolution &#8211; of inspired or accidental innovation, of testing and feedback.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">is safe but it is essentially static &#8211; something which Tasco had already identified as<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">being an unacceptable option. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><em><span style=\"COLOR:blue;\">Design as a management tool <\/span><\/em><span style=\"COLOR:blue;\"><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">Design exhibits itself in visual imagery and also in logical spatial planning.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It is also a<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">vehicle for engaging in managerial debate, and at a level which can include all <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">members of the organisation.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Thus, having open or enclosed coffee break areas,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">central or localised filing are not just about housekeeping, about what looks tidy or<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">what is convenient in the short term, but are subjects which strike at the heart of<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">management style.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>At stake are issues of staff trust, internal democracy, innovative<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">systems and processes.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The apparently trivial subjects include issues which, when<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">they are debated, involve strong opinions, often highlighting differences in <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">perspective between management and staff.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>In such discussions the designer is not<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">in a position to say what is right.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>He can however act as &#39;agent provocateur&#39; in<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">flushing out contradictory opinions, and in stimulating the exploration of alternative<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">forms of operation. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">So it was that in the gradual formation of the Tasco brief issues such as break areas,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"FONT-SIZE:11pt;COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\">meeting spaces, desk types, filing, security, reception, mail room, and training <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">facilities, were all used deliberately or inadvertently in debating the nature of the new<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">organisation itself. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><em><span style=\"COLOR:blue;\">The particular Tasco experience <\/span><\/em><span style=\"COLOR:blue;\"><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">In this description of the holistic, evolutionary Tasco process, a weakness might have<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"FONT-SIZE:11pt;COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\">been detected in that, with only a skeleton representation* of the new organisation<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">available to be engaged in debate, feedback was possibly not relevant. <\/span>Thus formal and informal presentations were<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">made to the interim management team and when new ideas were put forward by the<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">design team, whether it be about printer locations or video conference rooms, these<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\"><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\">proposals required discussion and signing off by <\/span><em><span style=\"COLOR:black;\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">someone<\/font><\/span><\/em><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"> with a user perspective &#8211; <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">as a project control mechanism, but also to ensure that associated issues had been<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">brought to light, at least where possible. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">The second was to approach cautiously anything that might not be changeable later.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">This included the basic space planning and the location of key building fixes**, and<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">those systems which once bought into are expensive to escape &#8211; such as the choice<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">of system furniture.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>With the choice of these fixes, the team had to rely on <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">experience, option appraisal and, in the case of furniture selection, the fairly <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">elaborate process of performance specification, open tendering and testing by means<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">of comprehensive mock-ups.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">The third was to limit the fixity of items which need not be permanent.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Deliberately<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">however a distinction was drawn between items seen as neutral or requiring almost<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">daily reorganisation to suit team working, and those &#39;landmark&#39; elements positioned<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">like coral reefs to structure the sea of open-plan desking and used to promote <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">colonisation of some yet undefined activity.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Unlike the preciousness now invested<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">with real coral reefs however, these locating objects were seen as disposable over<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">time &#8211; stimulating, beautiful even, but not precious, certainly capable of being<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">repainted, adapted and repositioned when necessary.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>A general pallet was built up<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">therefore of materials that were cheap but usable in a quality manner like the flats of<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">a stage set, essential for providing a sense of place, but ephemeral.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>As such they<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">could also be provocative, inviting future generations of occupants, who might not<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">like them, to do something better. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><em><span style=\"COLOR:blue;\">The &quot;Induction Nest&quot; <\/span><\/em><span style=\"COLOR:blue;\"><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">A particular incident in the development of the project was used to full effect in setting<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">this ethos of deliberate non-preciousness.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It was known from the start that training<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">would need to commence before even the first phase of building works could be<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">delivered.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The possibilities of renting space in a local hotel or taking on temporary<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">serviced space were considered.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Some of these possibilities even looked good<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">financially, not to say attractive in a programme already a little frantic in terms of <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">securing leases, appointing contractors and setting building budgets.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"FONT-SIZE:9pt;COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">The Tasco chief executive pushed very hard from the start however for this Training \/<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">Induction function to take place on site, where a sense of Tasco ownership and<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">identity could be established and where Tasco staff could feel from the moment they<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">started that their organisation was something different. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">In building terms some very rapid planning had to be put into place.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>A license to<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">carry out works was secured two weeks before the start of training itself.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Builders<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">excelled themselves, working round the clock and a &quot;stage set&quot; was presented on<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">time with the paint still having to dry. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">In design terms the exercise did several things.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It showed what was possible with<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">colour and graphics, and the positioning of a few key objects.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>More importantly it<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">broke down any pretensions towards preciousness and served as an immediate and<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">then ongoing source of feedback.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It was discovered that neither the chief executive<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">nor chairman were put out by a lime green entrance area, it taught critical things<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"FONT-SIZE:11pt;COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\">about the arrangement of training spaces, about the appropriate degree of separation<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">between administration and staff, about the need for quiet rooms, about the extent<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">and configuration of underfloor cabling.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">In proper management fashion the exercise has since been analysed and the <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">lessons incorporated in both the design and the design process for later stages. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><em><span style=\"COLOR:blue;\">The effect of the overall building on the design process <\/span><\/em><span style=\"COLOR:blue;\"><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">The building chosen by Tasco for their new headquarters happens to consist of <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">ground and six upper floors.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>While the size of these floorplates was identified at the<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">time of building appraisal as slightly smaller than ideally required, the stack of floor<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">space has proved useful as the project has unfolded.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>One floor has become what is<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">now known as the &quot;Induction Nest&quot;, described above.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>One floor has become the<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"FONT-SIZE:11pt;COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\">home of the management contractor and the storage of recyclable material. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">Individual floors are available for handover as they are completed and as the Tasco<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">workforce builds up. <span>&nbsp;<\/span>Most importantly the process of testing and feedback, started<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">with the Induction Nest, has continued and the persons now involved in debating the<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">business process and the design support system are Tasco employees.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Ownership<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">is being transferred imperceptibly and, with it, the understanding that the nature of<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"COLOR:black;FONT-FAMILY:Helvetica;\"><font size=\"3\">the building is part of the business itself.<span>&nbsp;
